rocknroll1968: Kurt singing his heart out (Default)
Here's some guidance on how I rank sources of information.

From most to least important, this is roughly how I rank my sources:

1. Quotes from band members, photos/video of band members, materials created by band members

2. Quotes from close friends, family members, and close colleagues

3. Quotes from others who were not close to the band, but who were present while the band was active ("in orbit")

4. Quotes from others who were not close to the band, and who were not present while the band was active (too young, didn't publish till many years later, random cash-in biographer, etc)

5. Oral history provided by fans of the band

In addition, I rank based on the following criteria (from most to least valuable):

Media type:
-Video>audio>books & magazines>other sources

Time period:
-Band's active years>after Kurt's death>many years after Kurt's death

Reliability of source:
-Long-standing, positive reputation>shorter or more negative reputation

Some info about my tags and how the non-obvious ones are used.

Date: = The year or time period the quote was given.

Date of story: = The year or time period that the speaker is talking about. Example: Krist is interviewed in 2014 and tells a story about 1992. This would be labelled Date:2014, Date of story:1992

Date:band era = Everything from roughly 1985 (the earliest date Kurt describes Nirvana as having formed) to 5th April 1994. Everything after Kurt's death is post-band era and everything prior to 1985 is pre-band era.

Media:quote = A quote from band members or close associates with a verifiable source (date, time, location, audio or video recording, magazine or book page scan, etc).

Media:excerpt = A quote taken from a non-close individual's words or writings, such as a paragraph written in a biography that was published after Kurt's death, which does not include actual quoted material from a band member or close associate.

Media:unsourced quotes = Any "quotes" I've found on the wilds of the internet that sounded possibly real, for which I have not yet located a real source. Please link to youtube videos, magazine articles, scans of books, etc, if you know a source for one of these.

Pairing:other = This can be used either for pairings that are not specifically listed (such as Kurt/Pat) or for situations where a pairing is heavily implied, but no names or identifying clues are given.

Topic:coming out = Instances where members of Nirvana publicly announced their sexual orientation (either by using a label, like "bisexual" or by talking about their sexual activities), along with anecdotes from family and friends on the subject.

Topic:'it runs in the family' = This tag paraphrases Kurt's mother, who acknowledged in an interview that homosexuality runs in the Cobain family.

Topic:sexuality = This tag is used both for sexual orientation and sexual activity

Topic:soulmates = Dave has described his bandmates, Krist and Kurt, as "soulmates" on multiple occasions (which can be found under the tag) and I agree with his assessment, so I've included instances that I feel illustrate his point.

A Note On Krist's Name

Since there's a lot of confusion on this in the fandom, I wanted to clarify why Krist is sometimes referred to as "Chris" in these quotes. He was named Krist after his father, Kristo, but started using the Anglicised version of his name in school to try to fit in better. He reverted to using the birth spelling in 1993 to show solidarity with his fellow Croatians during the Bosnian war.

How to pronounce Krist's last name:

quote of the day

"God is gay and so am I."
